well, i have read several questions about UFO that you have answers. It seems like you dont believed that UFO have visited Earth. My question is do you believed in UFO and aliens? |
| |
I’m not sure what you mean by your question. A belief is a conviction that is not based on evidence, so when you ask about whether I believe in UFOs and aliens, you seem to be asking about areas outside of science. But my guess is that you want to know whether convincing evidence exists for either U... Click here for more.

I know you suspect that there might be life on Europa (satelite of the Jupiter). Well it is obvious that you are going to send spaceship to that satelite. I was wondering when you expect to begin this trip and when you expect to have results about existance of life on Europa? |
| |
You are correct; Europa (with a liquid water ocean larger than that of Earth) is a target of great interest to astrobiologists. Europa and Titan are the two main targets under consideration for a major NASA outer planets mission to succeed the Cassini mission, now in orbit around Saturn. A choice be... Click here for more.

Lightning would be a natural source of radio transmissions from planets, including Earth like planets. In the search for extrasolar planets, would lightning transmissions be detectable and would it tell us anyhting we don't already know? |
| |
The key to detecting life on an exoplanet against the natural background (in visible, infrared, or radio waves) is to look for a biosignature. In SETI searches, this means looking for coherent radiation, such as pulses or narrow bandwidth signals, that would stand out against the background noise. I... Click here for more.

If extraterrestrials came to earth, wouldn't they die from all the bacteria? Wouldn't we have different bacteria and diseases in our air then them, and they would eventually die from it? I hope this makes sense. |
| |
This scenario is exactly the premise of one of the most famous science fiction novels ever written, H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds”. It is a fine book and has also been made into several movies, some of which are not too bad either. Wells, who was in effect an early astrobiologist, considered a life... Click here for more.

Hi, NASA! I would like to know what is your opinion about the crop circles in UK which is now appearing in Brazil. And what about the Nazca Lines in Peru? Do you have scientific answers for those question? If not, tell me what you think about it, please. Thanks. |
| |
As far as I know, NASA has not been involved in studies of either crop circles or the Nazca lines, so NASA has no opinions on these topics. However, I don’t think there is anything very controversial about either one. The original UK crop circles are known to have been man-made as part of an elabora... Click here for more.

Why have a space station in orbit when observations can also be made from the surface of the Moon or why not have a Moon base in conjunction with a orbiting station? It is the suspicion of some that your agency has deliberately avoided the Moon for reasons the public in generally unaware of. I have lost my respect for NASA over the years because of the deliberate cover-up that is being exhibited and perpetuated. I suppose the fear is that the public cannot deal with the truth, which I can’t say I disagree with. |
| |
Going to the Moon, and establishing a permanent presence there, is more difficult, and expensive, than operating a space station in low earth orbit. The decision was made 40 years ago by NASA, the Congress, and the Nixon Administration the pursue the Shuttle and Space Station first. Now, of course, ... Click here for more.

Hi. I was wondering... What if some bacterias were inside the rovers before it was sent to Mars? I mean, what if this bacteria is the Deinococcus radiodurans, so it can survive in the space and travel to Mars? Then let's say, in 2020 you discover life in Mars, but it is the bacteria that you sent there... Is there a chance for this happen? Sorry for my english, I'm brazilian. |
| |
This is an issue that is very important for the search for life on Mars. As far as we know, no terrestrial organism, not even radiodurans, could actually live and reproduce under the conditions at the surface of Mars. However, there are a number of microbes that appear to be capable of surviving the... Click here for more.

Why does (almost) every human on Earth think that all alien life looks like humans with small changes (large black eyes, green skin, short bodies, big heads, ect)? Also, why do people think that there is only one species of life per planet? I love astrobiology and fully support it! |
| |
I have not seen any surveys of "almost every human on Earth" that suggest that your claim is correct. As far as I can tell, most people don’t think about alien life at all, and astrobiologists are primarily interested in studying microbes and perhaps detecting their presence on other planets. Even i... Click here for more.

Which are the condition for a planet to support life and how we can determine the habital zone and what means this habital zone? Thanks!
|
| |
Astrobiologists look for three things that are required for a habitable environment: (1) liquid water, (2) usable energy source (such as sunlight for photosynthesis), and (3) organic (carbon-based) chemicals. Initially the habitable zone was defined in terms of the distance of a planet from the Sun ... Click here for more.

If and when life is discovered will NASA alert the public? I do not doubt that NASA has already found life and has not said anything, but what cautionary steps would have to be taken to inform the masses. It would be a touchy subject for some. |
| |
Yes, of course we would inform the public! Why not? So far NASA scientists have not found evidence of life anywhere outside Earth, but finding such life is the primary goal of astrobiologists. This would be perhaps the greatest scientific discovery of all time, and we would want to share it immediat... Click here for more.
