Asteroids III Meeting Planned for June 2001

Back to Archive

Article Posted: June 01, 2000

A major international scientific meeting called "Asteroids 2001: From Piazzi to the 3rd Millennium" will be held 11-16 June 2001 in Palermo, Sicily.

The first asteroid, Ceres, was discovered in Palermo just two centuries ago. Although the meeting is devoted to the larger topic of asteroids in general, we expect that a significant part will look at the latest research on Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs), the impact hazard, and results from the NEAR-Shoemaker mission currently orbiting NEA Eros. This meeting will also generate the information for the Space Science Series book Asteroids III. First drafts of all chapters for the book will be due at start of the conference on June 11, 2001, and final versions will be due on August 1. There will also be a concurrent meeting of the International Astronomical Union Working Group on NEOs.
